Overview

Our four-hour Fall Protection Awareness Training provides comprehensive instruction to students to make sure they are well equipped to execute fall safety procedures. We outline proactive measures for employees and supervisors to incorporate

         into their workplace operations.

Most workplace incidents are preventable and stem from a lack of information on proper safety protocol. With our training and information, you can reduce the likelihood of incidents in elevated work conditions.

         Multifaceted Learning

We will be discussing several topics in our Fall Protection Awareness Training and recognize that people have different learning styles. With the diversity of topics, we have refined the way we present the information to students. In all of our courses, we focus on making sure students are confident about applying what they have learned.

         Live Demonstrations

Often when you are learning new information there can be a lot of information presented at once and topics can be difficult to grasp. However, we strive to incorporate as many live demonstrations as possible to show how safety procedures are executed in realistic settings. In doing so, we are able to help students grasp the importance of the training and how it will benefit them in their workplace operations.

Job Site Preparedness for Hurricane Season

The official season for hurricanes in the United States is June 1 through November 30. The number and severity of storms fluctuate from year to year determined by atmospheric and ocean temperatures. Adhering to the following planning and preparing tips for severe weather can make the difference between being negatively impacted by a disaster or keeping your operations and personnel safe.

         Write a Hurricane Preparation Plan

The first step in getting ready for a hurricane occurs before there’s even one on the way. It’s important that you have a written hurricane preparation plan, whether it’s incredibly detailed or just a memo to assign everyone a task to complete in advance of the storm.

         Monitor the Weather

The second step is to monitor the weather on a regular basis, even when there is barely even the threat of a summer shower. Online sites will have the latest severe weather alerts posted almost immediately. Weather radios might be a worthwhile investment as well. These devices are configured to receive weather reports and are often equipped with alert capabilities that can be set to sound an audible alert if there is a severe weather event in store for the broadcast area.

         Secure Job Site Materials

Once it looks like a storm will be passing close enough to a project, job site personnel should perform critical tasks, such as securing materials, trash, tools or other debris that can take flight in heavy winds, including items like dumpsters and portable bathrooms.

Items like fence screens and job site signage also must be removed, and any in-progress utility systems must be protected from sand or seawater intrusion if there is the possibility of storm surge. Take the time to take any movable electronics and project documents from the construction trailer and transport them to a safe location offsite. Power must be turned off, if possible, and fuel must be made available to power generators if there is no power post-storm.

         Secure Hazardous Chemicals

Another important step is to make sure that any hazardous chemicals are moved or secured. Construction firms and others in the building industry should take the steps before a natural disaster to ensure they have a qualified team in place to handle their hazardous waste management program.

Ensure the Security of the Structure

Now that the items on the periphery of the project are secure, it’s time to safeguard the structure itself. For example, if the work is a renovation, or if work has progressed on a new building to a point where water can significantly damage the interior, crews should board up any openings and accessible windows and place sandbags around the perimeter.

         Assess the Damage With Caution

When the storm has passed and local authorities have given the go-ahead, it’s time to return to the project site to assess the damage and start to clean up. It’s important to use caution when navigating every area of the project site, especially those with standing water, as the accompanying sharp or jagged debris could pose a danger. It’s also essential to use the same care when entering a building after a storm because, depending on the extent of the damage, some structural elements could be compromised.

         Need Help Preparing?

Each situation is unique, but any organization can be better prepared if it plans carefully, puts emergency procedures in place, and practices for emergencies of all kinds. Let us help prepare your job site this hurricane season by

Workplace Safety Tips for Employees

The foundation of any successful workplace safety effort is one that encourages employees to identify unsafe behaviors and opportunities for improvement while also making well-informed safety decisions during daily routine tasks. Here, we explore a few safety tips that every employee should know.

         Wear the Correct Safety Equipment

If you’re not wearing the correct safety equipment for a task, you may get injured. Depending on the job, equipment like earplugs, earmuffs, hard hats, safety goggles, gloves or a full-face mask greatly reduce the risk of workplace injury.

         Be Aware of Your Surroundings

Once you’ve learned the particular hazards of your job or workplace, you will be able to keep clear of potentially hazardous areas, and potentially hazardous situations. You should also always be alert of machinery.

Report Unsafe Conditions to Your Supervisor

Your supervisor needs to be informed about any workplace safety hazards or risks. They are legally obligated to ensure their employees have a safe working environment and will take care of the unsafe conditions and make them safe for you and your coworkers.

         Keep Emergency Exits Easily Accessible

In case of an emergency, you’ll need quick, easy access to the exits. There should also be clear access to equipment shutoffs in case you need to quickly stop them from functioning.

         Use Tools and Machines Properly

Take the proper precautions when using tools, and never take shortcuts. Taking shortcuts is one of the leading cause of workplace injury. It’s a huge safety risk to use scaffolding as a ladder or one tool in place of another for a specific job. Using tools the right way greatly reduces the chance of workplace injury.

         It’s a Team Effort

Our team at Reliant Safety understands that workplace safety cannot exist on best practice guidelines and policies alone. A safe working environment is based on how well the people, in both management and on the factory floor, adhere to and communicate about safety standards. If you need assistance ensuring everyone in your workplace has a mutual understanding regarding safety,

Workplace Safety Mistakes You Shouldn't Make

Workplace injuries and illnesses are largely preventable, but workplace safety initiatives require both vigilance in safety training and inspections, along with strict adherence to all rules and regulations to be effective. Below are a few common workplace safety mistakes that you shouldn’t make.

Removing or Not Wearing Protective Equipment

Safety and protective equipment should be worn at all times when performing a task that merits them. Even if workers are uncomfortable due to weather conditions or believe they don’t need to wear their equipment, the equipment needs to stay on.

Not Reviewing Safety Guidelines Each Year

Revisit your safety guidelines every year so that they stay fresh in employee’s minds. Training and the dissemination of workplace safety guidelines, rules and regulations should happen on a routine basis. Safety guidelines should reflect regulatory and facility changes and be made available for employees.

         Skipping Machine Inspections

Always get your machinery inspected at the dates the inspection is due. There may be problems that you are unable to recognize or hidden dangers you have not accounted for. Proper inspections by certified professionals ensure machines are running correctly and are not hazardous or dangerous.

Using the Incorrect Tool for the Job

Not using the correct tool for a job can be dangerous and inefficient. You might think that a similar tool could work since it’s almost the same thing, but this approach can lead to injury. Many tools are made specifically for certain applications and those jobs will be done incorrectly if the proper tool is not used.

         Substituting Scaffolding for a Ladder

Scaffolds and ladders are each made for specific situations and need to be used properly. Substituting scaffolding for a ladder or vice versa is dangerous and can lead to serious injuries. It is imperative that you provide the proper equipment and training for employees using them.

         Ask Us About Other Mistakes

OSHA requires employers to provide employees with working conditions that are free of known dangers. Reliant Safety Solutions offers many training and safety courses designed to help our clients identify and eliminate hazards in the workplace.

What to Know About Scaffolding Safety

Improper scaffolding practices were the #3 OSHA violation in 2016. According to OSHA reports, an estimated 2.3 million construction workers work on scaffolds. This number translates to about 65 percent of the construction industry. American employers pay approximately $90 million in lost work days due to these accidents. Fortunately, all of these accidents can be controlled by compliance with OSHA standards.

         Guidelines Companies Should Adhere To

Scaffold must be sound, rigid and sufficient to carry its own weight plus four times the maximum intended load without settling or displacement. It must be erected on solid footing.

Unstable objects, such as barrels, boxes, loose bricks or concrete blocks must not be used to support scaffolds or planks.

Scaffold must not be erected, moved, dismantled or altered except under the supervision of a competent person.

Scaffold must be equipped with guardrails, midrails, and toeboards.

Scaffold accessories such as braces, brackets, trusses, screw legs or ladders that are damaged or weakened from any cause must be immediately repaired or replaced.

Scaffold platforms must be tightly planked with scaffold plank grade material or equivalent.

A “competent person” must inspect the scaffolding and, at designated intervals, re-inspect.

Rigging on suspension scaffolds must be inspected by a competent person before each shift and after any occurrence that could affect structural integrity to ensure that all connections are tight and that no damage to the rigging has occurred since its last use.

Synthetic and natural rope used in suspension scaffolding must be protected from heat-producing sources.

Employees must be instructed about the hazards of using diagonal braces as fall protection.

Scaffold can be accessed by using ladders and stairwells.

Scaffolds must be at least 10 feet from electric power lines at all times.

         Let’s Prevent Scaffolding Accidents

Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics suggests that protecting workers from scaffold-related accidents may prevent some of the 4,500 injuries and over 60 deaths every year. Reliant Safety Solutions offers scaffolding safety and fall protection courses to help keep your employees safe. Contact us today to schedule a training which can help you reduce workplace injuries and avoid fines.

The National Safety Stand-Down

According to BLS data, 366 of the 971 construction fatalities recorded in 2017 were caused by falls from elevation. These types of preventable deaths continue to be a leading cause of death for construction employees. In an effort to stop fall fatalities and injuries, the National Safety Stand-Down seeks to raise fall hazard awareness across the country.

         What is a Safety Stand-Down?

A Safety Stand-Down is a voluntary event for employers to talk directly to employees about safety. Workplaces can hold a stand-down by simply taking a break to focus on “Fall Hazards” and reinforcing the importance of “Fall Prevention”.

Employers of companies that are not exposed to fall hazards can use this opportunity to have a conversation with employees about the other job hazards they face, protective methods, and the company’s safety policies and goals. Employees can also use this as an opportunity to talk to management about fall and other job hazards they see.

         Who Can Participate?

Anyone who wants to prevent hazards in the workplace can participate in the Stand-Down. In past years, participants have included

How to Conduct a Safety Stand-Down and FAQ’s

Companies can conduct a Safety Stand-Down by taking a break to have a toolbox talk or another safety activity such as conducting safety equipment inspections, developing rescue plans, or discussing job-specific hazards. Although the dates for the National Safety Stand-Down are May 6 – 10, managers are encouraged to plan a stand-down that works best for their workplace anytime.

OSHA’s Expanding Reach

A recent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission ruling could have wide implications for companies dealing with highly hazardous chemicals, likely expanding the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s reach.

Clients in oil and gas and manufacturing could be affected by what many deem as OSHA’s expansion of what is included in the process when it comes to handling highly hazardous chemicals. Any facility that has highly hazardous chemicals needs to pay attention to this matter.

What’s troubling for businesses such as refineries is that the decision put a refinery out of compliance without the refinery even knowing that OSHA would expand PSM to utilities unrelated to the chemicals used in other processes. This creates a catch-22 situation without providing notice in a manner to let companies know what is expected of them.

This week our very own, Paul Johnson, was interviewed regarding how the business started and the services we provide. Here’s a bit of the interview.

"How did you decide to get involved in this line of work? As a third-generation iron worker, I started working for Herrick Corp, a structural steel company, in California out of Local 377 in 1994. In 2005, I started teaching for the apprenticeship school for Local 377 and 378 on the weekends, conducting safety training for new iron workers that wanted to get into a trade. In 2007, I relocated to Texas where I was hired as a safety manager for a local construction company here in Houston. In January 2012, I became a safety consultant for Kuwait Oil. I lived in the Middle East for a year and I even learned the local dialect. After my contract was completed, I returned back home to Houston to work for an oil & gas engineering firm."

Paris Las Vegas Safety Planning

         Paris Las Vegas Safety Planning

Paris Las Vegas recently made headlines due to its new colorful and flashy light show. The Las Vegas Eiffel Tower’s $1.7 million display consists of approximately 300 color washing light fixtures and more than 800 white strobe lights on the tower’s exterior.

The installation of the lights which reach the top of the tower was done by one of our clients,

           Vision Sign Inc.’s

Rappelling and Service team. It took the team roughly two months of strenuous days rappelling and climbing the tower to complete the light show.

Safety planning was also a dynamic process that took a substantial amount of time. A High Angle Rescue plan and cold weather training were provided for the team members that worked on the tower. Additionally, Vision Sign Inc. teamed up with the local Fire Department Technical Rescue Team in case the rescue was outside of the in-house rescue team’s training.
